iFiberOne: Ephrata auto detailer selected to work on Concorde aircraft

Ephrata’s “Buff Man” is leaving for Seattle to work another iconic aircraft – the Concorde.

Bill “The Buff Man” Quinn is part of prestigious group of specialty cleaners known as Air Force One Detailing Team. The 30-member team was led by master detailer Renny Doyle to clean the first jet powered Air Force One, housed at the Boeing Museum of Flight.

“(Air Force One) is on this year’s schedule as well,” says the Buff Man, “but the 204-foot luxury Concorde jetliner offers a significant challenge this year with its substantial length, and the iconic shape of its slender delta wings and fuselage.”

Quinn is joining the group to work on cleaning and preserving the Concorde supersonic passenger jet Alpha Golf. It was retired from service in 2003.

The airplane set a speed record for flying from New York to Seattle in three hours, 55 minutes and 12 seconds.

Quinn stated their experience with detailing aircraft gives him an idea of what lays ahead in cleaning the Concorde

“While restoring (Air Force One), we saw firsthand the effects of torrential rain, elemental contaminants, oxidation, and UV fading on the surface paint of an airplane,” Quinn stated. “The Concorde has been out of commission since 2003 and without a detailed cleaning or wax for over ten years, the exterior surface of this aircraft is remarkably vulnerable.”

Quinn’s 36 years of experience in janitorial services and automotive detailing helped earn him a spot on the team, according to Doyle.

“I have carefully selected my team because there is no room for mistakes in detailing these multi-million dollar airplanes,” Doyle stated. “I need people who will accept nothing short of perfection and Bill is one of those people.”

Quinn is happy to return to Seattle to work on another aircraft.

“I am honored to be chosen for the (Air Force One) team again this year. Last year, we discussed what bad shape the Concorde was in, so I’m excited the museum trusts us with yet another priceless slice of aviation history,” Quinn stated.
